Almost worldwide distribution;
(1) North America in w. and c. Alaska to Canada s. from c. Yukon, nw. and sc. Mackenzie, n. Saskatchewan to s. Labrador and sw. Newfoundland s. to s. Alaska and w. to the Aleutians and in the contiguous United States to c. California, w. Nevada, n. Utah, Colorada, n. and c. New Mexico, ne. Oklahoma, Arkansas, n. Alabama, Tennessee, c. West Virginia, e. Virginia and locally s. in nw. North Carolina, sc. South Carolina, sc. Texas, and ne. Mexico (n. Tamualipas and Nuevo Leon). Europe in Ireland, Britain to n. Scandinavia e. across n. Russia to Siberia to about the Kolyma River (Anadyrland) and Kamchatka and s. to the n. Mediterranean basin including Sicily, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, sw. Iran, sw. Russia (Transcaucasus) and c. Asia. Breeding has been recorded in nw. Africa.
Winters s. from Panama to South America (Brazil (Bahia)) and Africa s. to South Africa.
(2) Se. Kazakhstan.
Winters in either Africa or in sw. or s. Asia.
(3) C. Asia in the Lake Baikal region, c. Mongolia e. to ne. China (n. Manchuria, Heilungkiang, Kirin), Sakhalin Is., Kuril Is., and n. Japan (Hokkaido). May breed in ne. India (Assam).
Winters in se. Asia (Burma and Thailand) rarely including Borneo and the Philippines.
(4) Ne. Egypt in the Nile Valley.
Winters s. to Eritrea and Sudan.
(5) Breeeing range unknown.
Migrates through Israel.
