C. and w. United States from se. Oregon and n. California, Idaho, Montana, s. North Dakota and sw. Minnesota (formerly) to s. Alabama (Cat Is.), s. Louisiana, e. and s. Texas, e. and w. coasts of Mexico s. to Colima, Zacatecas, Mexico, Veracruz, Tres Marias Is., s. to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Winters s. to Belize (?), Guatemala and El Salvador. Colombia (?), Venezuela (Apure, Aragua). Ec. Peru (Mejia lagoons). C. and se. Bolivia , s. Brazil (Mato Grosso, Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul), Paraguay, Uruguay, c. Chile (Antofagasta to Valdivia, mainly from Cautin s.) and s. and c. Argentina s. to Rio Negro.
North America n. of Mexican border
Summer: breeds in coastal sw. LOU, e. and n. TEX, then locally in the w. in c. KAN, sc. NDK, e. MON, s. WYO, e. COL, ne. NMX, n. UTH, s. IDH, n. NEV, se. ORG, ne., c. valley and s. (Salton Sea) CAL.
Disperses to s. NEV, s. UTH, w. COL, SDK, sw. MIN, nw. IWA, NEB, c. OKA and through c. TEX;
Winter: c. and s. CAL, e. TEX, sw. LOU.
