Highly and increasingly fragmented distribution;
Mediterranean basin with an isolated populations in s. Spain (Guadalquivir Marshes Donana, Alicante and El Hondo Reservoir and wetlands, Valencia in Spain) and n. Africa (Lac de Sidi Bou Ghaba in Morocco, Algeria and Douz in Tunisia). Isolated populations in sc. Turkey in the Eregli Marshes and Goksu Delta, Israel (Hula Valley), Egypt (lower Nile Valley?) e. in the Near East to Syria, Jordan (Jordan River Valley), Iraq (Tigris and Euphrates Marshes), nw. and s. Iran, w. Caspian Sea (Armenia, Azerbaijan and s. Russia) and from the Aral Sea s. through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhastan to Afghanistan, Pakistan and recently ex. w. China (Xinxiang).
Formerly nested in Canary Is., perhaps the Cape Verde Is. and s. Europe in s. France, Italy, Crete, Cyprus, Yugoslavia and Greece.
Winters in the Mediterranean Basin (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt) and n. subsaharan region occasionally s. as far as Senegal, Nigeria, Mali and Chad and from s. Turkey s. to Egypt, the Middle East in Israel, se. Iraq, sw. Iran (Khuzestan), Pakistan (Zangi Nawar Lake, Chagai District, Baluchistan) and nw. India.
