Cordoba Province and Huelba, Sevilla, Cadiz, Castilla la Mancha, Valenciana) and Sardinia to ec. and wc. Turkey (Burdur Golu and Eregli Marshes), Romania (Danube Delta), ne. Israel (Hula Nature Reserve), nw. Iran, s. Russia (nw. Black Sea, n. Caspian regions and lower Volga River basin n. to Volgograd), Kazakhstan (e. Aral Sea, Lake Balkhash, Ile River Delta) and sw. Siberia (foothills of the Russian Altai, upper Yenisey River) s. to Turkestan, Tadzhikistan, n. Afghanistan and Iran border region, w. China (w. Sinkiang in the Tien Shan and Alatau) and nw. Mongolia (Ubsa Nor).
Winters s. in n. Africa (Lake Tunis, Tunisia and Egypt in Nile Valley), Greece (Lake Vistonia), Bulgaria (Poda Lagoon on the Black Sea coast), Turkey, Azerbaydzhan, s. Caspian Sea, the Middle East in Syria, Israel, Iraq, Persian Gulf region, Pakistan (lakes in Punjab Salt Range, Soon Valley, Uchchali and Khabbaki lakes) and nw. India (e. Punjab, Kashmir, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh).
Reintroduced to the Balearic Is., Hungary and Sardinia. Scheduled for reintroduction to France and Italy.
