Tropical Africa;
Senegamabia e. to Sudan and Egypt n. to Nile delta, Ethiopia, Somalia s. to n. Namibia, n. Botswana (Zambesi River), e. Mozambique and e. South Africa (Natal). Local breeding has been recorded in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Gabon, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
